Clinical Observation of Tuberculous Cervical Lymphadenitis

Abstract
A clinical review for 114 cases of tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis was made during past 5
years from July 1966, to June 1971, at the department of general surgery of Kwang-JU tri-service
hospital.
The results obtained as follow,
1. The age of the highest incidence was 20¡­24 years old age group 75 cases (65.79%).
2. The common local findings were painless swelling node 83 cases (72.81%), painful swelling
node 31 cases (27.19%), cold abscess 16 cases (14.1%) and fistula or sinus 10 cases (8.75%).
3. Significant laboratomy findings: over than 3% of eosinophils were 63.16%, over than 40% of
lymphocytes were 34.21%, and over than 15§®/hr of sedimentation Rate were 44.6%.
4. Seasonal distribution; summer 39 cases (34.21%), Autumn 33 cases (28.95%), spring 27 cases
(23.68%), and winter 25 cases (13.16%).
5. Node groups of involvement; deep cervical group were 78 cases (66.75%), submandibular group
39 cases (34.38%), superficial cervical group 38 cases (33.40%), supraclavicular group 33 cases
(28.33%), subauricular group 29 cases (24.86%) and retroauricular group 17 cases (14.65%). The
unilateral was 81% (left; 61%, right; 39%) and bilateral 19%.
6. The time interval from the onset of symptom to the first admission was less than 6 months in
43 cases (37.73%), 7 months to 12 months 43 cases(37.73%) and over than one year were 25 cases
(21.93%).
7. Complicated tuberculosis of cervival lymphadenitis 11 cases (9.65%), axillary tuberculous lymph
adenitis 4 cases (3.51%), and tuberculous peritonitis 2 cases (1.76%).
8. Post op. complications were as follows; infection 5.2%, nerve injury 2.1% and fistula or sinus
2.1%.
9. The recurrence of our series were 16.6% following medical treatment and 4.15% following
combined therapy (surgical and medical) during one year of the follow up.
10. Most good results of treatment were combined therapy (surgical and medical therapy).
